As the warmer weather approaches and we begin to shed the winter coats we jump on the scales to survey the damage. Just as I suspected those warm winter hugs, like my comforting hot chai lattes and my cosy bed have been detrimental to my waist line and my exercise regime.
Let me guide you in a great tip for shedding that extra weight and getting healthy this Spring.
You’ve heard of the old ‘Calories in: Calories out’ catch phrase of many spandex wearing gurus. Sounds simple enough? Well, you’d be missing the point. The whole point of losing those extra kilos is not to wear the finest bikini at the beach or to look the toughest at the gym (fine goals though they may be). The goal is to become the healthiest version of you.
Calorie counting can be time consuming and can often lead you into making poor choices for your health.
Take two snack options as our comparison: One mini triple chocolate chunk muffin total: 58 calories Vs. One punnet of fresh blueberries: 72 calories.
The ‘Calories in: Calories out’ theory says muffin every time. But let’s look at what it’s made from: refined flour, refined cocoa, preservatives, flavours, sugar, colours and artificial sweeteners. More importantly it’s missing essential minerals, vitamins, fibre, enzymes and disease fighting phytochemicals.
And the opponent: The Blueberries. The humble blueberry contains Vitamin A & C, iron and manganese which are all vital nutrients for the body. It’s high in antioxidants like resveratrol and its fibre content gives it a great GI* rating.
While the chocolate muffin has less calories it would leave you nutrient starved. The blueberries are the clear winner of the day.
We could calorie count all day and not find the solution to losing weight. It’s the quality of the food that counts. 5 Serves of vegetables and 2 serves of fruit will give you the nutrition your body craves while helping to shed those extra kilos.
My Tip: Skip the muffin and get on your bike. You never know, I might just see you out there.
